WordPress, Magento or Drupal: choosing the right platform

Each platform is excellent at something and expensive at something else. A plain comparison, including when none of them is the answer.

We build on WordPress, Magento and Drupal, and on custom stacks when none of them fits. That gives us a useful view of where each platform shines and where it costs more than it should. Here is the short version.

WordPress: flexible content for marketing teams

WordPress is a strong choice when a marketing team publishes often and wants to do it without a developer. The block editor, built well, lets editors assemble pages from approved components. With WooCommerce it can also run a capable store for small and medium catalogues.

Its weaknesses come mostly from how it is used. Heavy multipurpose themes and long plugin lists make sites slow and fragile. A lean custom theme with a short plugin list avoids most of that.

Magento: complex commerce at scale

Magento, available as Magento Open Source and as Adobe Commerce, is built for complicated commerce: large catalogues, configurable products, B2B pricing, several store views, currencies and languages from one installation. If that describes your store, few platforms handle it as thoroughly.

The trade-off is cost of ownership. Magento needs capable hosting, careful performance tuning and regular upgrades. For a simple catalogue, that overhead rarely pays off.

Drupal: structured, multilingual content with many editors

Drupal excels when content is highly structured, often multilingual, and managed by many people with different roles. Universities, public bodies, membership organisations and publishers use it for that reason. Its permissions, content modelling and translation features are deep.

For a small site edited by one or two people, Drupal is usually more platform than you need. Sites still on Drupal 7, which reached end of life in January 2025, should plan a move either way.

When none of them is the answer

If you need a small site that rarely changes, a hosted website builder may be cheaper and perfectly adequate. If your store has a straightforward catalogue, a hosted commerce platform can reduce running costs considerably. And if your product is a web application rather than a website, a custom build with a framework is often cleaner than bending a CMS into shape.

Headless setups, where a CMS manages content and a separate front end displays it, make sense when the same content feeds several channels or when performance and design freedom justify the extra complexity. They are not automatically better.

Questions that decide it

  • Who will edit the site, how often, and how technical are they?
  • How many products, variants, prices and store views do you really need?
  • How many languages and markets, now and in two years?
  • What other systems must it connect to?
  • What can you budget each year for hosting, updates and maintenance, not only for the build?

The honest answer is often "the simplest platform that handles your real complexity". If you would like a recommendation for your situation, our WordPress, Magento and Drupal pages go deeper, or you can simply ask us.
